Assassin’s Creed and the American Revolution: Echoes of Revolution and The Occupied City Exhibit

Assassin’s Creed III and Assassin’s Creed Rogue plunge players into colonial America during the Revolutionary War, giving them a taste of adventure during this turbulent and pivotal time in history. Now, Assassin’s Creed is celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Revolutionary War with two interactive augmented reality (AR) apps and an exciting contribution to an interactive revolutionary museum exhibit.

Echoes of Revolution

Visitors in New York and Boston can now experience the American Revolution on the streets where it happened with Echoes of Revolution, two free XR experiences, respectively, set in the worlds of Assassin’s Creed III and Assassin’s Creed Rogue. This 90-minute experience invites players to explore 10 location-based memories across both downtown Boston and lower Manhattan, in the streets where revolutionary history happened. Once on location, players can use their mobile devices to access augmented reality content from the worlds of Assassin’s Creed III and Assassin’s Creed Rogue, depicting what 18th-century New York and Boston could have looked like.

“Ubisoft is excited about using the worlds of Assassin’s Creed III and Assassin’s Creed Rogue to bring key moments of the American Revolution to life for visitors exploring the streets of Boston and New York City.” said Amy Jenkins-Le Guerroué, Strategic Alliances Director at Ubisoft.

Echoes of Revolution: NYC expands on the historical vision for the NYC Revolutionary Trail, and will take players through pivotal moments of the Revolutionary War such as:

  • The defence of the Hudson
  • Raising a Liberty Pole at City Hall Park
  • Toppling King George’s statue at Bowling Green

“New York City has long deserved a ‘freedom trail’ to spotlight its centrality in the American Revolution. But now thanks to Ubisoft and Sugar Creative, we can give people a rich visual and experiential sense of what it was like to live through this harrowing, inspiring, dramatic, foundational moment in history.” Peter Aigner, Director, The Gotham Center for New York City History.

Echoes of Revolution: Boston was developed alongside and with the support of Revolutionary Spaces, and will allow players to experience significant revolutionary moments, including:

  • The Boston Tea Party
  • Intelligence networks at the Green Dragon Tavern
  • Taking the helm of a ship around the Boston Common Lake

“It’s great to have a new way to engage with Boston’s incredible Revolutionary history landscape for the America 250 celebrations and beyond,” said Matthew Wilding, Senior Director of Interpretation and Future Planning at Revolutionary Spaces. “Audiences we don’t usually see will have a great reason to explore.”

The apps, developed by the Welsh technology studio Sugar Creative in partnership with Ubisoft, is powered by Niantic Spatial’s visual positioning technology.

The Occupied City Exhibit

The Museum of the City of New York is currently hosting The Occupied City, a major exhibition marking the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. It tells lesser-known parts of New York’s role in the war, showing how the city and its residents played a pivotal role throughout the conflict. As part of the exhibit, the world of Assassin’s Creed III was usedto create immersive videos showing the streets of Revolutionary New York, allowing visitors to walk through the city as it was then – a lived urban experience in an occupied and contested city.

“One of the most remarkable aspects of The Occupied City exhibition is the opportunity for visitors to experience Revolutionary New York through Assassin’s Creed III,” says Ted Knudsen, professor of History at CUNY Queens College “It is genuine time travel. Visitors can visualize a city that no longer exists, seeing its streets, buildings, and waterfront as New Yorkers of the eighteenth century would have known them. Kids instinctively dive in, while adults are often left amazed by how vividly the technology brings a lost city back to life.”
