Just Dance 2024 Edition brings the return of Workout mode, and the all-new Challenge mode, where dancers compete with players worldwide. Ubisoft News spoke with Creative Director Matthew Tomkinson to learn more about these new modes and the "A Night in the Château de Versailles" map.

What inspired the team to create Challenge Mode?

Matthew Tomkinson: We know that it is not always easy for players to be available at the same time to play Just Dance online. With challenge mode we wanted to offer a way for players to play together asynchronously! The principle is the same as texting compared to speaking on the phone, each has its own benefits.

How does Challenge Mode work?

MT: It is very simple. You choose your opponent, your song and try to beat their score, anytime. While you dance, you can see their dancercard and score. We believe it's a great way for friends and families to stay in touch even from afar, and you can try to challenge the best players in the world if you want by selecting them in the leaderboards!

Why did you decide to bring back Workout mode?

MT: Lots of players use Just Dance to work out, but up until now, they could not track the length of their sessions, number of songs, and calories burned. Furthermore, it is a feature that existed in another form from the past that players asked to come back. Now we believe it is much easier to set yourself objectives and daily dance fitness routines.

"A Night in the Château de Versailles" is a new map that gives players an 18th century-inspired experience, developed in partnership with the French National Center of Cinema and the Moving Image (CNC) and the Palace of Versailles. How did this collaboration happen? What was the process like to create this unique map?

MT: This collaboration opportunity actually appeared in the context of Paris 2024 Olympic Games! On the side of the sports event, cultural Olympics are organized with the idea of promoting French culture, arts and sports altogether. That's where dancing embodies both sports and arts, and the idea appeared of celebrating baroque music and dance through a game to reach a wide audience.

And what better place than Château de Versailles as a setting for that? With the support of CNC, The Just Dance team and the Château de Versailles' team worked closely altogether to make it happen, opening their doors for us to take all the references and recreate the royal estate, as well as putting us in contact with the team organizing baroque events in the Chateau. And here we are with a unique dance map!
