Ubisoft Announces Winners of its In-Game Photography Contest

The winners of Ubisoft's in-game photography contest were announced tonight at its Photomode: Out There in Games exhibition in New York City.

The exhibition, running November 17-20, showcases the work of 20 winners, alongside the top three jury favorite submissions from overall winners Nicholas J. Clapper, Katie S. and Camille Petit. The exhibition also features the work of four industry artists, Mélanie Courtinat, Pascal Greco, Will Saunders and Kent Sheely, who were given free range to express themselves within Ubisoft's worlds.

The exhibition was organized by Mohamed Megdoul, curator and founder of Immersion magazine. Megdoul wanted to shine a spotlight on the potential of in-game photography, as well as question the way videogames can make us feel; he believes that the three overall winners very much fit the brief.

"Photomode: Out There in Games is an exhibition that questions the way videogames envelop us, make us feel, how they move us," explains Megdoul. "Each winner answers these questions in their own unique way, but viewed together, they complement each other.

"Camille Petit's photographs are of submerged melancholic characters and feature close-ups of photorealistic textures and effects. This work pushes us to question the nature of mathematical simulations of organic life.

"Nic Clapper's work collides with that of Camille's with an opposite praise of the orthogonal. His work features straight lines, mathematical perspectives, automobile mechanics, an absence of character, mineral and lifeless sets.

"Finally, in this dialogue between simulation of the organic and mathematical precision, Kate S.'s work praises storytelling and poetry, revealing us that the door to emotion is above all in the stories that we tell ourselves."
