Ubisoft+ Spotlight - Blasphemous

(Editorial note: This is a series of quick weekly highlights written by Ubisoft News team writers that feature games available with a Ubisoft+ subscription. We hope you'll enjoy reminiscing with us, or perhaps discover something new.)

Brittany Spurlin, Writer/Editor: Blasphemous, an action-platformer developed by The Game Kitchen and published by Team 17, was among the recent indie additions to the Ubisoft+ library on May 25. In the game, you take on the role of The Penitent One, the sole survivor of a massacre called the Silent Sorrow in a world ravaged by a curse known as The Miracle. Now, you must seek out the sacred relics that will give you the power to break the cycle of penance the citizens of Cvstodia are trapped in.

The Miracle has turned most of Cvstodia into gruesome and deadly monsters, which The Penitent One will need to fight, either using his sword for melee combat or acquired spells for ranged combat. However, The Penitent One's magic can only be used by spending Fervor, which is earned through melee attacks, so be sure not to favor one method over the other for balanced gameplay. You'll also be able to equip the relics and other useful items you find to give you new abilities and customize combat to your playstyle.

One of the most interesting aspects of Blasphemous' combat is The Penitent One's sword, Mea Culpa, and the rose thorn attached to its handle. The sword was made from guilt itself, and the thorn is there to feed off of The Penitent One's sins. As you complete Confessor Dungeons, the thorn will evolve through eight stages, but beware - the bigger the thorn is, the more damage you'll take in combat. However, you can only unlock the game's canon ending if you evolve the thorn into its final phase, the Cvstodia of Sin, by the time you reach the final boss fight. Fortunately, you can upgrade Mea Culpa to become more powerful as well, helping you to keep an edge over the waves of enemies you'll face in Blasphemous.

You can play Blasphemous today with a Ubisoft+ subscription.
